Considerations in Choosing a Flight School for Your Pilot License
Imagine the personal and professional possibilities of knowing how to fly a plane via a stint at a reputable flight school. You can travel the world, meet plenty of exciting people and engage in numerous adventures as well as expand your professional horizons. The sky’s the limit, indeed, for competent and confident pilots.
All of these opportunities start with choosing and then enrolling in the best flight school possible – or stated in another way, the best that you can afford. It can be a formidable task considering the wide variety of legal, educational and financial considerations involved but it can be made easier with the following tips. Just remember that enrolling in any flight instruction program is a big decision so you should take your time and think it over.
What Do You Want?
It should be emphasized that flight schools offer many types of flight instruction programs. From the start, you have to ask yourself what your goals are in regard to enrolling in a flight school. In short, why do you want to learn how to fly?
Do you want to do it as a recreational pastime or as a viable career? Do you want to fly in a local area or to travel abroad? Do you want to fly your own plane or rent it? Your answers to these questions will determine the program you will be looking into in a flight school.

There are two types of flight schools to choose from:
• Part 61 – Minimum flight time is 40 hours for private lessons and 250 hours for commercial pilot applicants. Students have greater flexibility with their time and lessons.
• Part 141 – Minimum flight is 35 hours for private lessons and 190 for commercial pilot applicants. The curriculum is structured and subject to rigorous audit by the FAA.
What Can The Flight School Offer?
Once you have chosen the type of flight school – Part 61 or Part 141, that is – that you wish to enroll in, your next step is to look at the qualities of each one. We suggest reading the literature, asking for reviews, and making on-site inspections of each flight school to determine its:
• Philosophy, goals and objectives
• History and reputation in the flying community (Ask past enrollees about their experiences with the instructors, staff and flight school in general)
• Quantity and quality of staff on board (Look for valid licenses and certifications before checking with concerned private organizations and government agencies)
• Types and condition of the training aircraft
• State of the classrooms and other training facilities including the runways
You must also interview the flight instructors of the flight school, when and where possible. Keep in mind that your life is in their hands, literally, when you go flying up in the air so you must be confident in their abilities, too. Your interviews with the instructors and staff of the flight school will also provide valuable information on how the classes are done.
You should also look into the financial considerations involved in enrolling in a reputable flight school. You should never compromise a good flight education for affordable tuition, however, for obvious reasons. Your life and your career are at stake here so be careful how you choose a flight school.
